#Song of the Huntress#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#This is - okay? some very interesting and complex characters#i liked the women of the wild hunt and I liked how aethelburg as a warrior queen is just sort of normal not some kind of girlboss thing#it’s very slow paced - I doubt I would have gotten through it if not for the audiobook#the historical setting and details and complexity of the plot is interesting#I did read it for the ace character so:#unsure how i feel about how his asexuality's the reason for the problem in their relationship. like the book tries to make it the issue tha#he didn't TELL her about it but.....but ultimately it is just his asexuality as the issue. idk. not that I don't think that this kind of#ace narrative shouldn’t be explored I guess. it was just a smidge too portrayed as him being the problem#I feel like if he were aroace at least it’d be like okay; she finds in someone else what he doesn’t want to give her#but he literally does love her romantically lol. which makes the subplot of the romance between the women like......ok she's cheating#bc her husband won't fuck her? not to minimise complex characters down to surface level ships but also….#the sapphic relationship is kinda undeveloped/insta attraction and not much else -the book is conscious of this &#I don't think it tries that much to convince us it's something more than that (other than how it affects the character's personal journeys)#but still. idk. I guess I do like that it doesn't conform to perfect-narrative-romances but evidently unsure about how it did so#this makes it sound like I hated the asexuality and the sapphic relationship - I didn't hate either I just didn't love them lol#also his sister is also aroace and becomes a nun and otherwise she's offscreen - lost opportunity imo!

Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: 成化十四年/The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty
(The) Sleuth of (the) Ming Dynasty (it's hard to get an agreement on how many definite articles should go where) is a beautiful, high-budget 2020 drama about a weenie genius detective, his long-suffering and deeply traumatized sugar daddy, and the eunuch with the most difficult job in the Great Ming: keeping these two dumbasses from getting their fool selves imperially executed.
Depending on how you like it, it's either an OT3 or an OTP with an intense, underage third wheel, and either way, it's delightful. I wouldn't call it a comedy, but it has very many funny elements that keep the drama fun and engaging. The first half is full of shorter mysteries that are clever and thoughtfully plotted, and the second half goes in on the longer mystery that ties them all together.
I've already done my quick guide to the early-episode characters, if you want a taste of just how many people are running around and how wonderful they all are. But in case you want to know a little bit more before you commit yourself to a 48-episode series, here's five reasons I think you should watch it!
1. The whole thing smacks of gender
Yeah, this was originally going to be selling point #2, but I know what the people want.
This is not a show about gender. But boy it is a show that has a lot to say about gender, and not just by way of critiquing premodern Chinese gender roles (though it does do that!). Many of the cis characters are either a) somewhat gender nonconforming, b) canny enough to weaponize binary gender expectations, or c) both. Sui Zhou's entire third-act storyline is about how expectations of masculinity exacerbate PTSD in veterans. Three different AFAB characters either dress or live as men. The part where one of the male characters goes undercover in drag is played for laughs, but the joke isn't 'ha ha, a boy in a dress,' it's 'ha ha, this particular boy in a particular dress, and also he's terrible at it.'
And that's even before we get to the eunuchs.
There are several professionally dickless, permanently unmanned characters running around. One-third of the OT3 canonically had his external genitalia nonconsensually removed when he was five years old, and because of this, he has been given unimaginable authority. He's basically the second most powerful man in the entire empire, and he only gets that way by being unquestionably, ostentatiously, and genuinely submissive to the first most powerful man.
I have seen other Chinese media where eunuchs are treated like sinister clowns, good only to be the bad guys and the butts of jokes. Sleuth's main eunuchs are real and complex characters, and because of this, the show gets to explore what it is to live in this weird third-gender category of incredible power and powerlessness.
Now, don't go into this expecting woke gender treatises. Wang Zhi's never going to sit down and go, "You know, my friend and fellow eunuch Ding Rong, because of my lack of a penis, I understand my relationship to masculinity differently than other men do." But the show understands that even if he doesn't say it, it's true. And that makes a lot of the characters and their relationships just so much more interesting.
2. Uncle Jackie Money
Sleuth was the was the fourth c-drama I dove into, following the Untamed, Word of Honor, and Guardian -- or, Some Money BL, Less Money BL, and No Money BL. So imagine my absolute wall-eyed shock to find this was All The Money BL, courtesy of its executive producer, Jackie Chan (seen here with some of his handsome boys):
Sleuth looks good. The costumes are amazing. The sets are stunning. The cinematography is beautiful. Everything is so detailed, and while I can't speak to the absolute historical accuracy of all those details (see point 3), they're still gorgeous. In fact, you know what? I'm going to shut up and show you some of the promotional images.
(For actual screenshots, I'm just going to point you at @rongzhi's tsomd photoset tag, as they have done a tremendous service to the fan community -- though do beware of spoilers.)
Uncle Jackie's influence doesn't end with the money, though. Even though things get a bit goofy and wirework-y near the end, most of the drama's fights are shows of real martial arts skill. You can see his fingerprints on a lot of the choreography -- I'm thinking particularly of the time Tang Fan tries (and fails!) to stab Sui Zhou three times, which is pure Jackie Chan high-speed dexterity.
Add this one to the category of shows your Average American Television Enjoyer Who Can Handle Subtitles would like. In fact, I have shown the first episode to my normie father-in-law, who was impressed. Show it to your dad! See if he picks up on the gay!
3. I am from ... HISTORY!
The Chinese title translates to "The 14th Year of Chenghua," which works out to the year 1478. There are some clear anachronisms, but they tend to be played for comedy, so it's hard to hold that against them. On the whole, though, the show is trying real hard to evoke a very specific moment, and I feel it does so beautifully.
This does, however, mean that several of the characters are real people. I don't even have a good sense of how many of them are based on historical figures, that's how many. Hilariously, Wang Zhi's tag on AO3 used to read "Wang Zhi (?-1487 CE)."
Moreover, these are characters I've seen pop up in other media, played very differently! In particular, Noble Consort (up there in blue) tends to be written as an uncomplicated villain elsewhere, whereas Sleuth gives her a chance to add some goodness to her badness, until, damn, you can't but root for the bitch. (It also downplays the cradle-robbing, which, honestly, is for the best.)
You may have guessed from the eunuch section earlier, but it bears repeating: Wang Zhi is straight-up the best character in the show. He's smart as hell, and he has to be, because the second he's stupid, he's dead. I actually consider it helpful to know ahead of time that he's never going to do a heel turn -- I feel like on my first watchthrough, I was holding my breath for the first two-thirds of the show, waiting for his sudden but inevitable betrayal. It does not come. Wang Zhi is one of the heroes.
He's also, like, evil. He orders people flogged, tortured, and executed. The very first thing you see him doing is sinister as hell. And the show clearly doesn't think this is good, but it also doesn't judge him for it. He's a traumatized seventeen-year-old who has not had a normal moment of his entire life. He's working thanklessly for a boss who could kill him on a whim -- and he's doing it because he literally, physically was made for his job. He's mildly freaking out because he has no emotional grounding to help him understand that these weirdos want to be his friends.
Was the real Wang Zhi like this? That's beside the point. The point is, you get to see how someone in that position could wind up as the war-crimes-committing platonic ideal of a little meow meow.
4. oh my god the food
Warning: This show will make you hungry.
Again, beware of spoilers, but @peppersandcreamsicle and @qinzai have put together an entire cook-along Google Doc so you don't just have to drool -- you can do something about it! Or you can just read it and learn about Chinese cuisine, which is a little more my speed.
But it's not just about how good the food looks. Food is a vital emotional part of the series. People bond over it. They make and share it as a sign of love and care. It indicates status, ethnicity, interest, personality. The show's message about the healing power of cooking for the people you love will bring you to tears.
And yes, Sui Zhou is the main one doing the cooking, so get ready to drool over both the dishes and the handsome man preparing them.
Oh, and as though that weren't enough, Fu Meng Po can actually cook in real life. He's so dreamy. Absolute unreal handsome man with a devastatingly sexy voice. (I know my opinion might be different if I could hear his Taiwanese accent, but I can't so it's not!)
5. An Unsunk Ship
So like I said, my intros to c-drama couples had been WangXian, WenZhou, and WeiLan. That meant I'd basically come to terms with the idea that you can't have a main couple in a BL-but-not-really drama without splitting them up at least a little in the end, for no-homo plausible deniability reasons.
Tang Fan and Sui Zhou are still definitvely, unequivocally together when the story ends, as the iconic pentultimate scene of the series confirms with beauty and simplicity. I refuse to give any more details than that, but that ship's afloat.
(These shirtless pictures aren't from the end, but I wanted to include them, and I didn't have a better place to do it. ...Also, you know, ships and water? Yeah?)
And I think their winding up together reflects Sleuth's entire attitude. Tang Fan is made of sunshine, and the series loves him for it. There is tragedy aplenty in this show, but there's no misery. It is ultimately a hopeful show that believes in the power of second chances, if you're willing to take them. Time and again, the moral of the story is that you are only ever as good as the people who have your back -- but you have to be willing to let them have your back. Let people help you. Let people cook for you. Let people give you a reason to keep living. And then keep living.
Also, Sui Zhou gets two good kabedons off on that little twink, which means they're legally married now. I don't make the rules.

Spoiler-Free Review: Oh, but this was so GOOD! This book reads as a LOT more complex than what I remember of MDZS. For one, the worldbuilding is MUCH more thorough than the world of MDZS, which had enough details in it to build a sense of what it’s like in the reader’s head, but certainly not to the same detail as this book. While it’s set in a fictional China, this book goes beyond China’s borders to show its connection to fictional versions of Central Asia, Europe, and Japan.
And in line with that expansion of the world, the plot and the themes expand as well. While this volume contains elements of mystery and court intrigue, the main bulk of the plot (in this volume anyway) is centered on the resource called violet gold (which reads like a stand-in for crude oil) and the ways Great Liang has attempted to secure its supply of the resource. Those methods include soft and hard controls of the market, but notably, it includes colonial subjugation of a region where the resource is most abundant. That latter bit makes for some interesting thoughts if one is a reader for whom such a theme is of interest, especially given how one character in particular states that, if it were up to them, they would go on a colonial-expansionist project in order to ensure the safety and stability of Great Liang.
While all of those are weighty and complex topics, this series is still firmly in the danmei genre, as shown by the relationship between Gu Yun and Chang Geng, whose relationship is a bit more nuanced and complex in its portrayal than that between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. There are plenty of silly moments, of course, and more than a few times I facepalmed (in a good way) at their dynamic, but while it’s clear that they are the main romantic couple of this series, their relationship is not as clear-cut as the main couple in MDSZ.
Overall, this was an excellent read: a step up in terms of style, narrative, and thematic concerns compared to MDZS, while still remaining within the ambit danmei as a genre. I am not entirely sure if this difference is a result of the authors’ specific skills and styles, or if it is a result of their respective translators, but regardless, this volume certainly shows that priest is entirely capable of doing some very good worldbuilding while weaving a complex plot, as well as working with equally complex themes. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next volume, as well as for priest’s other works, because I think that her writing might just be the kind I really enjoy.

Finally, I can post about a costuming project literally years in the making: my worldbuilding costumes!
I started this project a while ago, to combine two of my interests; costuming and worldbuilding/writing. I honestly have to say that I prefer worldbuilding to actually writing the story, and in one of my stories especially I’ve worked really hard on creating a complex high fantasy world with details and pieces of information that no one would ever really need. Of course, a part of this was figuring out clothes for all the different cultures of the world, and planning out how they were made, what textiles were available, how their clothes were made to work with the environment around them, how they reflect cultural norms, ect. And I decided that, if I’d done all this work to design the clothes, I might as well sew them to make sure that they worked and made sense the way they did in my head, right?
So, I did just that! I’ve been working on this intermittently, between other sewing projects and dependent on when I was feeling it, what I had planned and designed, and when I could get the things I needed or knew what I needed to know. I’ve learned so much over the course of this project, and my skill level and confidence in my costuming abilities has changed tremendously from my first costume of this project (fae) to my last (vampire). Additionally, while I may not yet have an actual plot that uses this world (I’ve done a couple little one-off things, plus it serves as the distant past for my more modern fantasy story Fires of Gor’thall and I’ve pulled a lot from it for other worlds for other stories, but no one big major story), this project has been endlessly helpful for figuring out how things work and how to describe them, as well as the fact that just having these costumes has been great. Sometimes, when I’m struggling with inspiration, I’ll just dress up in clothes from my world, and sometimes it helps
The guidelines I set for myself for this project were essentially “as accurate as reasonably practical”. I’ve used my sewing machine, but limited it to either cases where a straight running or backstitch would be used (ie construction seams) and hems (I did handsew a few hems on my vampire clothes, but not all of them), with the one exception of the sleeve embroidery on the blouse for my elven clothes, since my own embroidery ability is rather lacking and since it was white on white there was no need for the color mixes done in other embroidery. Seams were all finished in a historical method (binding or felling, mostly), and eyelets were sewn by hand. I did my best to keep the fabrics used as accurate as possible, although I did used polyfelt rather than wool felt in my demon clothes (wool is expensive. I was lucky enough to get the material for the vampire clothes at craft supplies exchanges and yard sales, but not so much with the felt) and some of the “linen” I used in my daemon clothes was actually a mock-linen cotton-Lycra blend that acts much like actual linen. I also sewed just about everything with polyester thread and most of the trims are either polyester ribbon, or, in the case of the ones that I wove, made with mostly acrylic and cotton yarn rather than linen and wool
A note on terminology: I know this is a fantasy world, and as such, there is no such thing as “historical accuracy”, but I will be sometimes using words like “historical” or “period” to refer to things, meant in the context of “accurate to this world”, because these are the terms I am used to using from dress history and historical costuming

Bookclub thoughts: two for one
Cold-Hearted Rake and Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas
I wasn't going to do a bookclub thoughts for Cold-Hearted Rake (CHR because I'm lazy) because I just enjoyed it and had nothing much to say. I have a lot to say about Marrying Winterborne (MW) though, and these books are almost impossible to separate. Which is my first major criticism, I don't think these books are fully enjoyable by themselves. CHR spends a lot of time in the second half setting up Helen and Winterborne, at the expense of the main pairing, and Winterborne is such an ass in the start of MW so i dont know how he's likeable without the previous book.
The family dynamic is easily the best part of both books, with the romance complexity suffering by comparison. I didn't mind this in CHR because setting up the family dynamic was so core to Devon and Kathleen's personal arcs, whereas Helen has an arc outside of her family dynamic.
As I said previously, I enjoyed CHR immensely. They are both such angry bitches who fight over nothing 😂. It truly is an excellent rivals to lovers. But I also appreciated that it takes place at a family home, with no balls or socialization. This is a side of historicals that I see less and it was interesting. Kleypas also flexes her researching chops with all of the widow details and mourning requirements. It kept the plot from being repetitive by introducing something new. In this sense, Devon starting an affair with his cousins widow was a different relationship dynamic. They get married eventually, but it's nice that Kathleen was in a position where she could have an affair without risking her livelihood.
And I do think that the various aspects of female independence were important for my enjoyment or dislike of either book. Kleypas takes a fairly unflinching view of the ways historical society was harsh on women, but she doesn't always make efforts to combat it. Or care to. It's a very different book to identify the double standards between men and women and have the FMC demand her due, as a modern woman might. There are people writing those books but Kleypas doesn't. She does keep her FMC's in character for the time, which I usually appreciate, but sometimes puts them at the mercy of the patriarcy, which I don't appreciate.
CHR focused extensively on the ways Kathleen was bound by the rules of widowhood; she would be forced to mourn a man she'd been married to for three days, she lost portions of her property to the estate, and her fortune now rested in the hands of the unknown cousin. For all that she might be allowed a discreet affair, she lost more than she gained. And Devon, for his part, acknowledged this and was as kind as he could be given the situation. Specifically, he couldn't give her back her horse since the estate had no money and it wasn't done, but he deferred to Kathleen on his training prior to sale.
By comparison, MW highlights the vulnerability of young women in society and then has it be a test of affection. Helen approaches Winterborne privately, which risks her reputation, and then agrees to sleep with him, which ruins her reputation without question. I'll give this scene credit in that it's a bold inciting incident, but it puts a bad taste in my mouth. Kleypas makes it clear that Helen is at a disadvantage just existing in the same room as Winterborne, yet he still demands she sleep with him "so that she could never leave". And she agrees, making a leap of faith because she trusts him (or is too naive to be suspicious) and it pays off. I don't dislike romance characters making grand gestures or trusting their partners, but it's disappointing that Kleypas has her heroines do it in a more detrimental way than she ever makes her men. It's true, Helen can't ever leave winterborne now, but it's fine because romance. This isn't fundamentally the same as winterborne's grand gesture of writing Helen into his will, because he isn't actually at risk for this, it's just his empire.
AND ALSO. THE WILL THING NEVER COMES UP AGAIN. After the indecent proposal, Winterborne realizes he's put Helen unnecessarily at risk (no shit?), and decides to write her as his sole benefactor immediately. It's a boss move, I'm not gonna lie, but it made the previous scene even more confusing. At one point Winterborne goes "I have no idea why I insisted we bed" and I'm like dude I super don't know either. It's almost like kleypas wanted the initial scene to be exciting and then literally bashed him over the head so the reader would like him again. And then he never tells her that she has the best life insurance policy on the planet, which ruins the gesture.
Helen purposefully ruining her respectability is a theme of the book, I'll give Kleypas that much. For as much as I don't like the initial scene, it rounds out her arc very nicely... but not in a way that makes their romance look good. She starts out by deciding she wants to marry winterborne for honestly very flimsy reasons. She's never met another man, she just thinks marrying him will be exciting and fulfilling. There are a few points early on where Helen notes how strongly she feels for him that distinctly reads like a teenagers first crush. I don't find their relationship very compelling in the first half because it mostly reads as two characters in love with love but not each other. They have bonding moments and real connection they just act super infatuated rather than recall any moments of depth. All of this makes Helen seem way younger than she needs to be. And then the actual book plot kicks off and Winterborne is at most an accessory for Helen throwing away her reputation because it's the right thing to do. She truly grows by the end of this book but I don't feel like they grow romantically.
Winterborne, by contrast, gets no arc. After hitting his head and deciding his will, he mostly exists to provide Helen with gifts and dick her down. He hates this one guy, of course, but it's just there for helens plot and not something he needs. The biggest growth for him is that he's no longer dreaming of the blue blooded babies Helen will give him (ew) which he only thinks about for a second when he's being an asshole. In fact, that whole plot point is pretty much dropped only to come back in his big speech. There's set up in CHR that he wants upward mobility and his engagement to Helen, but he spends no other time wooing aristocrats, and almost all of his screen time is championing equal rights for workers, donating to charity, and rescuing orphans. Dude clearly does not care what the aristocracy think of him so it loses impact.
I will say that premarital sex is handled differently between the books and its odd. CHR utilizes the pull out method and a no strings attached affair to establish spice in a historical setting. It works well enough, until Kathleen rides Devon and he climaxes inside her. And doesn't blame her for it (ha ha bridgerton). The threat of a baby from this one event is enough for them to eventually get married. Meanwhile, MW thinks about babies... sometimes. It's a bit of a dropped ball in a book about illegitimacy, not gonna lie. There is the initial sex, and Winterborne thinks of Helen possibly becoming pregnant from that when he does the will thing. Helen, meanwhile, wants to wait to get married until she's out of mourning, and when confronted with possible children adopts a "we'll cross that bridge if we get to it". Considering they continue to use no birth control, the "if" feels more like a "when" that never gets addressed. Not even when Helen decides to leave on her own. She just never thinks about her possible pregnancy, even when it's referenced as a way she might trap Winterborne into marriage. It was an odd missing plot point in a book that's kind of full of them.
For all of my bitching, MW has an excellent final speech. It's something sorely missing from CHR, but alas. Can't have everything

April 2023 Books
Moongarden by Michelle A. Barry (reread)
The character arcs and themes are so drastically different from those in TSG that I'm inclined to call this one a retelling only in the basic premise of there being a secret garden. That's not necessarily a criticism; just go into this one managing expectations accordingly. The second time around I found this one a bit of a slog for me. There were a couple of interesting supporting characters, but I didn't really connect with the protagonist or even the plot in general. The worldbuilding is interesting, but it wasn't enough to make me want to seek the sequel which is coming out later this year.
The Runaway Robot by Lester del Rey
I forget which one of you recommended this one, but it was delightful. The robot narrator was endearing, and for a book its length and intended audience, it had quite a thought-provoking examination of the nature of humanity and a society that treats sentient beings as less than human because they're robots.
Disenchanted and Transformed by Megan Morrison
Morrison's worldbuilding is striking, and her retellings of fairy tales inventive (to the point that the Cinderella retelling is practically unrecognizable thematically). I didn't find the more political plotlines very interesting, but the characters were more complex than those of a typical middle-grade book.
When the War Came Home by Lesley Parr
I enjoyed Parr's first book, but this one was less interesting to me personally.
Lost and Found by Sarah Prineas
Sequels to The Magic Thief. I liked them well enough but am not especially invested.
The Beatrice Letters by Lemony Snicket
This one isn't very long and is more of a contribution to the Lore than furthering of the plot, but the love letter ("I will love you if I never see you again, and I will love you if I see you every Tuesday...") is the highlight, both darkly humorous and rather poignant.
The Painted Garden by Noel Streatfeild (reread)
Maybe this isn't Streatfeild's best children's book from a technical perspective, and it is definitely flawed, but the way the narrative interacts with TSG is quite thoughtful. You can tell that Streatfeild loved and understood the book. The story is also fascinating culturally and historically: a glimpse of late 1940s California from the perspective of British children. Streatfeild is fascinated by every detail of daily life, and it makes the world of the narrative quite rich. (This is downplayed quite a lot in abridged versions, such as the American edition titled Movie Shoes, but the abridgment does have the advantage of eliminating a lot of the material that didn't age well.)
The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud
I liked this one, but it somehow wasn't as much of a page-turner for me as the first book. I am looking forward to reading the next one. Stroud's style is a thing of beauty.
The Crystal Snowstorm by Meriol Trevor (reread)
The premise of this one is fascinating, but I wish Trevor had developed her young protagonist more! I got the sense that who she really wanted to write about were the adults.
This was an interlibrary loan from the Library of Congress (these books are so hard to find that that's what I had to resort to), and I meant to finish the series but am opting not to after finding that the beginning of the second book wasn't to my taste.
Gravebooks by J. A. White
Refreshingly did not suffer from Middle-Grade Sequel Syndrome (i.e. the first book was charming and original and the second is somehow a lifeless slog). It was a worthy successor thematically to the first book.
The Mystery of the Gulls by Phyllis A. Whitney
Not one of Whitney's stronger mysteries but had an interesting setting.
As for comics, I haven't been reading anything new steadily since I was concentrating on screenshotting a series I've already read (so I don't have to put myself through scouring the entire thing whenever I need a panel for reference), but now I'm moving on (slowly) to screenshotting early Tim Drake material, including some issues that were new to me. You guys might get some of those panels inflicted on you at some point.

Anyway ! Better late than never but here's my favorite stuff I read in 2022 :
- Last Night at the Telegraph Club, by Malinda Lo. Without a doubt my favorite read of the year. Somehow it manages to be heartbreaking, tender and uplifting all at once. The writing is beautifully evocative, the details chosen so clever, and I found the main character painfully relatable. It illuminates a type of experience, that of a young Chinese American lesbian in 1950s San Francisco, that has generally fallen through the cracks of history - it's a celebration of the fact that queer people have existed, everywhere through time and space, and have found ways to be happy even though it was scary and hard and they couldn't tell anyone. And it also illustrates the complex intersections between her different identities - the struggle of her immigrant family to build a life in the US during the Red Scare, the racism she experiences in queer spaces, how she struggles to make a future for herself as a woman interested in science, etc, in a way that feels very important and builds on each other. Also, it's a wonderful tribute to queer spaces and how life saving they must have been, the wonder of discovery, having to rely on crumbs of info and representation, how dangerous and uncertain it all was, just, ugh. Reading this made me think of my 17 year old self who would repeatedly go through the street of the only lesbian bar in town on purpose without daring to go in for years. It's like !!!! That specific mix of longing and anxiety and anticipation. Things have gotten so much better, and yet. Ugh. Anyway, the sense of place and geography in this book is brilliant. Also the romance is very sweet, and the end, if frustratingly open ended, took my breath away. Anyway there is a reason why it got so popular and it's one of the best sapphic books I've read - also YA at its best, easy to read uplifting coming of age story that is also well written and doesn't set aside complexity, richness of historical detail or psychological nuance. Destined to be a classic honestly.
- One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston ; already reviewed this one but for me this was the perfect fun enjoyable queer summer romance with an interesting plot and cool characters and vibes. Perfect for what it was honestly.
- Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand ; also popular for a reason ; clever and inventive and inspiring YA, with a great uplifting kick the patriarchy solidarity between girls + Buffy vibes. Good ace rep and I just found the main couple really compelling, especially Val, the privileged queen bee with the family secretly cursed to serve a horrible monster that takes over their bodies and forces them to commit atrocities, how she's honestly kind of an evil bitch at times and is allowed that moral ambiguity but also gets to be brave and heartbreaking and lovable and redeemed in the end and also empathized with as a victim of abuse, and it's like !!!! This is exactly the treatment that male characters get so often and female characters were denied for a long time. Main couple feels like the meme where the popular shallow girl and the 'not like other girls' edgy loner girl are actually falling in love and also, real people instead of cliches. I feel like the author could have done a bit more with the atmosphere but overall it was great and I would have been obsessed with this book as a teenager.
- A Marvellous Light, Freya Marske : gay Regency fantasy romance, what's not to love? Fascinating characters and cool magic system and just a joy to read. My main caveat is that I read it in the beginning of the year and I don't remember much of it but I did remember having a blast reading it.
- Cultish, Amanda Montell : Cults have been a hyperfixation of mine for a long time, for reasons that range from intellectual/writerly interest in what it says about human behavior and group dynamics, wanting to understand how power abuse works and generally processing some fucked up shit I've experienced and witnessed growing up. And there is a lot of sensationalist, dehumanizing stuff out there, so I liked the book's more compassionate and humanistic approach. People on the whole don't join cults because they're isolated wackos or mentally weak or instable or desperate ; in fact cults tend to go for the strong willed, determined idealists who want to see the best in people and have a lot to gain in joining a movement that promises change and real action for a better world. (Unfortunately this is why a lot of cult victims are oppressed minorities). They prey on people's innate need for group belonging and meaning in an atomized world that offers little, using manipulative mechanisms of language that slowly shift your reality away from you. Far from outlandish, these mechanisms are already used at a lesser degree by a lot of big mainstream institutions and religion, and are everywhere in ads and on social media (I especially liked the bit about how MLMs function like capitalistic cults whose protestant/prosperity gospel ideology is deeply tied into our current system, which is why they've been allowed to proliferate so well). And yeah honestly i think recognizing those techniques in order to be immune to them should be basic education. Also I liked the point that a lot of what makes people vulnerable to cults are also often very useful important qualities in other settings so you can't set them aside entirely. So a very interesting book, even though it's still pop science so it gets judgmental and imprecise in places.
- Getting to Yes, Fisher and Ury : lmao this is not a very tumblr book but this is a book about principled negociation, e.g how it's not being a domineering asshole that makes you a good negotiator but instead you can get to the best outcomes by being methodical, empathetic, knowing exactly when and where to stand your ground and when to be generous, setting good boundaries and communication and showing the example by being fair without being taken advantage of. Obvs very useful in a pro setting but I think in general this is a very affirming book if you're the quiet, shy type who struggles with self-confidence. Like, you don't have to be an obnoxious immoral backstabby asshole to get what you want, you really don't.
Overall this was not a good reading year, with 18 books read down from 34 in 2021 - mostly because there were some months where I completely forgot to read. But, I did have a lot of fun reading and I still think that's the most important. Also I read more queer love stories than straight ones, which I am very happy with and definitely want to continue with.
My main goals for 2023 are to read more and especially all the books sitting unread on my shelves (you know the issue.) I want to get into more intellectually challenging stuff and balance it out with lighter reads, esp. queer adult romance and fantasy. I'd like to write more reviews here again. And yeah I want to keep having fun most of all.

Spoiler-Free Review: On the surface, this book is a beautifully deep and detailed historical novel, with all the right period details. It’s also a bit of a mystery/horror novel, with all those tiny nods to the (historical) legend of the Essex Serpent and the touches of folk horror in how the people of Aldwinter talk about it and deal with it.
But at its core, it's all about the characters, who are all quite complex and layered in their portrayals. None of them fits into any sort of stereotype one might find of them in Victorian novels: Cora isn’t necessarily the typical widow (merry or otherwise), William isn’t the typical parson, Martha isn’t the typical lady’s companion, etc. Each character has an idea of what the other characters are like before meeting them, then another idea of what they’re like after meeting them. That idea changes throughout the course of the novel as the plot plays out - a plot that is largely driven by the way the characters interact with each other. There’s a kind of ripple effect: one character takes some kind of action (or doesn’t), and the effects of their action or inaction affects the other characters, to a greater or lesser degree. This is what makes the characters - and the novel - enjoyable to read.
This dynamic is clearest with Cora and William. Initially they have some negative ideas about what the other is like, but when they finally meet each other in person those ideas change, and become more positive. But as the novel goes on, it becomes clear that though they get along and agree on a lot of things, there’s also plenty of things they DON’T agree on - but that just makes them more interesting to each other, more enjoyable to be around. This creates an interesting push-and-pull between them, that ripples out onto the other characters. Those characters, in turn, react to that dynamic, and their reactions spark similar reactions in other characters, including Cora and William.
Of course, none of these dynamics would be interesting if the characters themselves weren’t interesting on their own. As I mentioned earlier, none of the characters are stereotypes, but some are, I think, a bit more interesting than others - largely because of how they shine a light on aspects of British Victorian history that might not always be made obvious in other media based on the time period. The most obvious example here is Martha: her socialist politics provide a refreshing contrast to the politics of the other characters, but her sapphic-coded relationship with Cora, and her more complicated, politically-slanted relationship with Spencer, also add angles and layers to her that are not always visible in media and literature about the Victorian period.
But where does this leave the Essex Serpent itself, and its story? While it’s still a presence in the novel, and is the reason why all the characters come together in the first place, it’s really more of a symbol than any kind of actual threat. In that sense it can be viewed in many different ways, but the one I lean more towards is that it is a symbol of making assumptions, and disillusionment: two things all the characters undergo, for better and for worse.
So overall, while some readers might come to this novel expecting something in the horror or gothic vein (like I did, initially), they’ll quickly come to learn that this really is a story about the characters in it, and how they interact with and react to each other, than about any supposed monster lurking in the river. While this might be disappointing to some readers who were looking for a scarier read, others might find themselves unexpectedly delighted by the novel’s character-heavy focus and the author’s wonderful prose.

Review: Suzuki Tsuta's Barbarities
Barbarities by Suzuki Tsuta (originally published 2016-2020, English translations released 2019-22--yaoi manga eras are IMPORTANT to me, ok?) is a fun, action-packed historical romance about a fancy boy, former-royal-turned-bodyguard (Viscount Adam Canning) falling in love with the righteous and surprise! super pretty judge/politician (Judicial Lord Montague, aka 'Joel') he's been hired to protect from assassination attempts! This is a porn WITH plot--the writing is definitely the centerpiece, as an elaborate political drama plays out in the backdrop of Joel and Adam's love story. I loved the playful frenemies dynamic between the effeminate, beautiful top and an older, somewhat surly bottom. I read the first 3 volumes earlier this year and then had to wait months for the final volume to come out on fan sites, but dang it was worth the wait--volume 4 was splendidly explicit!
Where to read: a. google 'read barbarities free' like a CRIMINAL or b. purchase yourself some print comics from Seven Seas Entertainment, my new favorite publishing house since they also publish MXTX's books! I'm waiting until they have all 4 but then I'm buying the set, heheh.
I really enjoyed this manga--would probably give it an 8 or 9 out of 10--but first I wanted to share some content warnings and bad jokes with which I took issue. While there is (miraculously) not a r4pe in this story between our two main characters, there's a scene in which the top attacks the bottom in a kind of 'see, I could do it but I don't want to' fuckin weirdo move that felt pretty disingenuous with the rest of the story, wherein Adam chases Joel around like a lovesick puppy. The other thing I'll flag is a tasteless prison-r4pe joke--I think?? There were a lot of jokes made about Adam being imprisoned at this super tough island prison, and making all the other prisoners either bend to his femme-boy-bad-assery or fall in love with him or... implies that he r4ped the other prisoners? I could not tell, and would be interested to hear what other folks thought of this 'joke'. Maybe we can give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume he was just beating up the other prisoners, but my queer little eyeballs sensed innuendo and I didn't like it. It just feels like this comic was so close to completely escaping the SA trope in yaoi (a very ~complex issue~ since sometimes I want emotional realism but also CNC is a VALID fantasy) but ultimately fell just short of the mark. In short, content warning for mentions of / implied sexual assault.
That said, all the other parts of this story are absolutely FANTASTIC, so let's get into why I loved this manga so much. ❤️
Art: I mean look at this shit, it's absolutely beautiful. Tsuta-sensei knows what the hell she is doing and I was so pleased to see such a talented artist tackle such a complicated setting! She added little post-script comics at the end of each book (there are 4 volumes in total) about just how time-consuming and exhausting it was to illustrate all the frilly clothes and fancy sets, but dang I am so grateful she did, this manga is gorgeous. I don't think I've ever read another period piece comic with this level of detail, and I've always loved how she draws her men. They have feminine, pointy faces with touches of a sharp jaw or facial hair, and her droopy little sad-eyed boys delight me.
2. Story: Thicc ass storytelling here--mentioned this up top, but it's a fantastic 'porn with plot.' The political dealings get a bit intense at times, but don't let that deter you from getting to the juicy bits. Aside from our main couple, we get 2 side narratives: one is about a prince from a neighboring country, and his servant/former slave (yikes) who have some really fun 'bro time' whenever the prince gets drunk, which of course gradually progresses to falling in love. Side story 2 is about the boy-king (he's like, 8) of the country in which the story is set falling in love with princey's younger brother when he come to visit. They're both like, 8, and it's very chibi and cute and whatever. Not really my thing, but cute.
3. Characters: Hot AND hilarious, Joel and Adam are so much fun to watch. Y’all know I love a femme boy, and there are TWO excellent ones in this manga and I am here for the femme for femme energy. You can't tell from the cover art, but Joel is actually dressed in a disguise with a barrister's wig, fake beard, and glasses for like 60% of the story and it is SO funny, it's like watching Oliver Cromwell star in a boys love manga. The author makes his garments, like Joel's robe, very ~pretty~ and he blushes hilariously under his big ole wig, I absolutely LOVED it. Adam is tall with long blonde hair and such a pretty face that I would absolutely break my no-blondes rule for him. His demeanor is highly effete, which I love for the top/leading man half of the duo, it’s quite unusual to see the seme (manga slang for ‘top’ for my darling n00b readers) actually acting like a gay man. Far too often the top is a straight men who swaps teams for one beautifully feminine man, but in this case we have an out and proud bi/pansexual ch
Playboy noble Adam has heard of the talented judge who rose from being a commoner to a trusted confidant in the king's court, and he genuinely wants to work for this principled man as his loyal bodyguard. When he discovers the man's 'nephew' Joel is actually Lord Montague without his wig on, Adam falls in love with this hot slice of rational philosophy and decides to pursue Joel until he consents to be his lover.
Excellent comedic bickering in this enemies-to-friends-to-lovers dynamic really makes this one of my highest-rated BL manga of all time.
4. Horniness - hehe yeah we gots it let’s get this post FLAGGED y’all
This is definitely more about the plot than the porn but fear not lovelies, there are some great sex scenes. I’d say the sex between the visiting prince and his attendant is the hottest, while the climactic smash between our two leads is much more tender and sweet. I like both! But my favorite is definitely when the visiting prince ‘rewards his servant’ (read: himself) by letting him c*m inside. Stellar. A+. We love an angry bottom boy who resents the fact that he loves when his boyfriend fills his ass. 💖
Final verdict: if you like a well written slow build to some tasty, realistic & emotional sex scenes, this is the story for you! If you’re just trying to JO I’d say skip to Volume 2, Chapter 16 hehe 😏
